According to a new report from the US Bureau of Statistics, Illinois' recreational and hospitality sector has suffered devastating damage and lost more jobs than any other state in the country in recent years. Illinois lost 762,200 jobs in 2015, up from 788,000 in 2014 and 1.5 million in 2013. Illinois' recreation and tourism sector lost more than 1,500 jobs, or about 1 percent of the state's total jobs.
The Decatur leisure and hospitality sector lost more than 1,500 jobs, or about 1 percent of the state's total jobs, compared with April 2019. Peoria lost 77 jobs in the same period compared with the previous year, while Decatur lost about 5,000 jobs, or $1.5 million.
The COVID-19 pandemic hit Illinois hard and was worst in Decatur, Peoria and Elgin, but communities outside those cities were hit by the downturn, with the largest losses coming from the Chicago area, according to new Bureau of Labor Statistics data released May 28. While metropolitan areas across the state have suffered massive monthly job losses, communities have borne the brunt of the decline in recent years, as the latest labor market figures show. Chicago, Illinois' largest city and the nation's second-largest, has suffered the largest job loss, with 1.5 million jobs, or about 2.1 percent of the total.
